Varkala beach


Thiruvananthapuram city in Kerala is home to many scenic beaches. One of them is Varkala, which located just 54 Km from the main city. Calm and secluded, the expanse of Varkala gives the much needed respite from the rush of regular life. Enjoy Kerala backwater on the lazy and leisurely house boats.


1. Janardhanaswamy Temple-It has been a pilgrimage for Hindus who come here from all over India and world as well. The temple is 2000 years old and inspires great devotion.

2. Sivagiri Mutt- This place is known for giving ultimate salvation to the great social reformer named Sree Narayana Guru, as he was cremated here on a hill called Sivagiri.

3. Varkala formation- This special rock formation, one of its kinds, is declared a geological monument by The Geological Survey of India.

This beach is rich in mineral water springs. It is believed that a dip in these holy waters will remove all the impurities of body and the soul and free human beings of all their sins. This is also the reason for the name 'Papanasam 'of the beach.


The beach could be easily reached from Varkala Railway station that is just 3 Km away from the beach. For tourists from abroad, they can land in Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, which is just 57 Km away from the beach.
